Methods of Evaluating Teacher - Kristine Raap

The question of how to evaluate the teachers seems to draw, the more controversy than the most any other the professional occupations. You rarely read the newspaper articles about hearing pundits discussing on talk shows how a pilot, accountant and attorney of the physician must be evaluated. It is generally accepted that the people in these professions should be evaluated based on the behaviors that lead to or detract from the successful performance of their job. In the contrast, the teacher evaluations are be mixed bag of their behaviors and the increasingly outcomes of the students' scores are being too introduced as a factor in overall teacher evaluations.

The Evaluation must be based on the criteria that lead to positive student outcomes and not to the outcomes themselves. They must also be linked to the broader school district vision and the mission statement. Without expected follow up and accountability, vision and the mission of the statement are worthless.

Outcomes As Measure Of Teacher Performance:  Outcomes are they influenced by the behaviors of individuals, but are not completely dependent upon them. Failures to achieve the goals were due to a standardized test to capture a teacher's performance is a flawed in the same way. It is unlikely the future of a teacher evaluation will not include the some degree of student performance, but it must be a very small piece of the evaluations pie.

Teacher Performance Is Teacher Behavior:  A concept that has existed for many years within the performance management is “performance is behavior”. When we are talking about the performance of one teacher compared to another we are really talking about how one teacher behavior compares to another. This is perfect because behaviors can be managed through the training, motivation and the consequence.

Tools To Manage Teacher Performance: Typically evaluations of the teachers are performed 1-3time a year. Right now, in most of the districts, an administrative member of the district observes a lesson or two and forms rating that are supposed a reflect the performance of the whole year. This practice is flawed are educators now it. The teacher does not expect to be able to review a student work one to three times through of the course of the entire year only to find then they have mastered of the subject material for the year without any other feedback, correction and motivation.

Kristine Raap is a teacher who has been nominated as a teacher of the year three times while working for Wallace School District.
